Any city simulation game can be tricky for new players to get used to; there’s always the question of where to begin. The hardest part of this game is building a city that will survive the first month.

The first thing you’ll need to do in the game is select a map with a river and a relatively flat surface layout. Choosing a map with access to a river will be helpful for sewage disposal later in your gameplay.

At the start of your game, before you build anything, you’ll need to pause the time in your game. Pausing time in the game allows you to build your city at your own speed and prevents costly maintenance fees.

Once you have started to master the basics of gameplay, it’s time to look at building the infrastructure for your city. All cities need access to water and power and must have a successful sewage system for waste removal.

You must use water pumps or towers to provide clean and running water for your city. Water towers should be built in an unpolluted land area, preferably close to electric power lines on the city's outskirts.

You can also provide water to your city by placing water pumps near the edge of clean water sources. Now that you have access to water, you’ll need to build a pipeline that will distribute the water to buildings in your city.

Your city will also need an adequate sewage system to dispose of human waste. Build a sewage drain system that drains into a separate body of water. Ensure your sewage doesn’t drain into a body of water near your water supply.

Of course, pumps and buildings can’t operate without a stable power supply. At the start of your game, you will have limited funds and cannot build massive power stations. However, you will have enough funds to build a few wind turbines on a hill.

Wind turbines need sufficient space to operate at their full potential. Find an open area or a hill with few trees; this is the ideal place to build wind turbines. You will also need to connect power lines to your wind turbines so you can supply power to your city.

Now that you have built the basic infrastructure, you should build roads in your city. The important aspect of building roads is to remember the flow of traffic. Building one main road with small streets branching off will create traffic congestion.

At the start of your game, you should build roundabouts to control traffic flow. As your game progresses, you must branch off from the roundabouts and build alternative traffic routes.

Once your game has progressed, after a few hours of gameplay, you will unlock pavements and sidewalks for your pedestrians. Building sidewalks that connect your city will decrease the amount of traffic on your roads, as pedestrians can walk to a destination instead of driving.

Your city must also be partitioned into residential, industrial, and commercial areas. There should always be space between a residential area and an industrial zone to prevent noise pollution.

With the basics of your city completed and under maintenance, the secret to success is expanding your city. You will need to acquire a loan and pay back monthly installments; however, the benefits of expanding outweigh the slight loss in revenue.

As your city expands and you will unlock new amenities, build them as soon as they become available. Your city must have schools, a fire station, a police station, a cemetery, hospitals, and a landfill.

Every added building must have access to a road and power, so make sure your power supply can handle the demand of new buildings. You must upgrade your basic infrastructure as your city expands to meet the demands.

The demand meter at the bottom of your screen is a helpful indication as to what areas in your city you will need to upgrade and develop next. Remember to go back to old sections of your city and do some maintenance to keep your citizens happy.

Roads are the pathways in and out of your city. Without them, your city wouldn’t exist. It is, therefore, essential to build roads that allow traffic to flow and avoid congestion. This means that you will have to construct interchanging roads and overhanging bridges.

The only way for roads to cross is if they are built over or under one another. To raise a road, you will first need to be in a road placement mode; it can be either curved, straight, or freeform mode.

Once in road placement mode, you will see a blue outline of the road you want to build. When the blue outline of the road is visible on your map, press the “Page Up” key to raise the road by a single level.

You can raise the road by multiple levels by continually pressing the “Page Up” key; this helps build intersections.

Select Your Map Carefully

The most crucial choice you must make is to select your map area. Pick a map with the resources and travel connections you want to build your city around. You can’t change the available resources in your area and will be stuck with what’s provided on your map.

It’s best to select a map area that offers a little bit of everything; this will ensure that your city is diverse, and you will run into fewer problems throughout the game.

Place Your Sewage Water Downstream

Polluted water will harm your civilians, and placing your sewage draining pipes downstream will prevent your city's water from becoming contaminated.

Place Buildings 2 Tiles Away From the Road

By default, every building in the game is built against the road; however, the building will still have access to the road even if placed two tiles away. Leaving a space between the road and your building allows you to place other items in front of the building.
