Raiden

The former Thunder god is one of the best characters for first-time players. Taking over from Liu Kang as “the chosen one,” Raiden retains his usual lightning powers and the beloved “Superman Fly” move, but he’s become much easier to play with.

He is faster than usual, and his special moves and strings are easier to execute. He has access to various solid strings, including his overhead chop. Raiden is a fantastic jack-of-all-trades type character, meaning he’s perfect for new-time players and has a ton of fun moves.

Liu Kang

While Liu Kang might be the Fire god now, he is still a solid fighter and a good pick for players, no matter how new they are at the game. He’s got some of the best projectile attacks in the game, and his basic strings have a launcher that can be used to extend kombos multiple times. 

Liu Kang can deal a lot of easy combo damage, good zoning, a solid neutral game, and his Dragon Tail move is fast and acts as the perfect combo ender. Getting used to his moves doesn’t take long, making him perfect for first-time players.

Baraka

Given his status as a fan-favorite character, the developers decided to give him more love and flesh out Tarkatan. While he no longer has the easy projectile moves of his predecessor, he’s significantly more brutal, making him way more fun.

He can deal incredible damage, and his combo timings are easy to figure out. The Baraka Barrage is his most important move, allowing him to deal 30% - 35% damage through kombos. And that’s without Kameos. 

Li Mei

After many requests, Li Mei is back with a ton of kombos and tools that will have your friends sweating once you figure out how to use them. Her strings are solid, low, and pop up opponents for kombos. She has decent projectile attacks, and her special moves are a lot of fun to execute and watch play out.

Her minimal overhead moves make her a bit basic, but this is easily compensated for through Kameos. Her lantern is a brilliant mechanic as it increases the damage dealt in kombos and acts as an anti-air tool, which is helpful given the jump-focus nature of the game.

She’s simple, making her the best choice for first-time players, but she still has access to a few fun moves, including aerial projectile attacks and epic-looking flips and kicks.

Johnny Cage

Johnny Cage has always been fun to play, given his numerous brutalities, amusing lines of dialogue, and various skins. The game developers poured even more love into his character this time around.

His basic moves aren’t difficult to master, making him perfect for a first-time player, though it does take a bit of effort to master the rest of his moves. His strings are as impressive and fun as ever, so learning his complex moves and various brutalities is worth the effort. 

He’s the perfect long-term character for those who stick with the game.

Dragon Krystals are one of the four currencies used in the game, and while most are self-explanatory finds, getting your hands on Dragon Krystals is difficult for some players.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to earn them in-game, and players will have to spend their actual money to get some (though if you bought the Premium or Kollectible Editions of the game, you should already have a handful of Dragon Krystals):

• 500 Dragon Krystals - $4.99

Once you’ve purchased the Dragon Krystals, you can use them to get cosmetics, Kollections, and even some characters. 

Fatalities are one of the most defining features of the game. As with previous iterations of the game, every character has two fatalities, though players will have to unlock the second one before they can use it. It’s a time-consuming process, but no price is too high when it comes to brutally murdering your opponents.

The second Fatality will unlock once you’ve reached a specific rank using different fighters. Once you’ve unlocked the Fatalities, make sure you hit the right buttons so your final strike isn’t an accidental punch in the arm.

There are 12 Klues, each of which will lead to chests that will reward you with Character Palettes, Fear, Legendary Talismans, and Rare Konsumables. You must perform a specific action in the match to complete these Klues.

ESDORYT TEH DWLOR (Destroy the World)

You’ll find this Klue in the Fengjian Village and can complete it by performing Cyrax’s Kameo Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• Heat of Battle (Reiko Palette)
• Bleeder (Nitara Gear)

TOASTY!!!

You’ll find this Klue in the Sun Do Festival and can complete it by performing Scorpion’s Kameo Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• Flame War (Kenshi Pallette)
• Night Fever (Baraka Gear)

AMNISTLA4 (Talisman 4)

You’ll find this Klue in the Sun Do Festival and can complete it by using a Talisman in a match four times. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• Lost Ring of Delia
• Onetime Pyromancer (Tanya Palette)
• Merciless (Reiko Gear)

FLIPPING OUT

You’ll find this Klue in the Tarkatan Colony and can complete it by changing your Stance (L2/LT) in the match 30 times. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• Serpent Sting (Reptile Palette)
• Viscountess of Nevala (Sindel Gear)

DEDAERHT (Threaded)

You’ll find this Klue in the Tarkatan Colony and can complete it by performing Ashrah’s second Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• Clutch of the Devout Monk (Liu Kang Gear)

Another Test Subject

You’ll find this Klue in Shang Tsung’s Lab and can complete it by performing Shang Tsung’s second Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

Brutal Ways

You’ll find this Klue in Shang Tsung’s Lab and can complete it by performing a Brutality with any character or Kameo. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• Disaffected Revolutionary (Havik Gear)

QUACKx10

You’ll find this Klue in the Living Forest and can complete it by pressing the Down input to crouch ten times. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

NOMED RENNI (Inner Demon)

You’ll find this Klue in the Living Forest and can complete it by performing Sareena’s Kameo Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

ERTECA AOSCH (Create Chaos)

You’ll find this Klue in the Living Forest and can complete it by performing Havik’s Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

KCIRT TAH (Hat Trick)

You’ll find this Klue in the Fire Temple and can complete it by performing Kung Lao’s Kameo Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• Edge of Forever (Geras Gear)

Use the element that brings life

You’ll find this Klue in the Fire Temple and can complete it by performing Rain’s Fatality. Once you’ve unlocked it, you’ll receive:

• River of Lava (Shang Tsung Skin)
• Lost Ring of Delia

Classic Fatalities

The game has plenty of new gory fatalities, but it brought back some classic fatalities for Scorpion's second fatality and Cyrax and Sektor’s Kameos. 

Scorpion’s fatality is originally from MK3: a wave of his clones starts spawning on-screen and surrounding your opponent until everything fades to black. The updated version of the fatality spawns three clones that assist with the fatality. Scorpion finishes the job with a kick that pops their opponent’s skeleton through their back.

Cyrax’s fatality involved a bunch of grenades spilling from the cyborg’s suit to blow up Earth, and Sketor’s has a compactor crush your opponent. Both of these fatalities have returned with updated visuals.

Wonder Woman

Ashrah hasn’t made a playable appearance since 2006, so fans are excited to see her return with a new design. Her voice belongs to none other than Susan Eisenberg, the voice of Wonder Woman across several different forms of media, including NeatherRealm’s Injustice series, and the development teams reference the Amazonian as much as they possibly can:

Ashrah’s sword turns into a glowing lasso, not unlike the Lasso of Truth, for one of her fatalities.

One of Johnny Cage’s intro lines for Ashrah is, “You are truly a wonder, woman.”

The Watchmen

Given NeatherRealm’s history with DC, it makes sense that they’d want to reference various characters as much as possible. This one involves Smoke’s customizable gear. One of his masks (Fogged In) is a direct nod to Rorschach’s character in The Watchmen, a grim graphic novel with a dark twist on a superhero team that received a film adaptation and HBO series. The mask has white cloth sewn inside as the covering and is marked with ink blotches. It’s missing a few details but does a great job mimicking Rorschach’s mask.
