Metro series books
Easter EggsThe Metro video games are based on a series of novels written by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. These novels are Metro 2033 (on which the first game was based), Metro 2034, and Metro 2035. Copies of the books can be seen in various spots in the game world.
9/11 Tribute
Easter EggsThere is a tribute to the 9/11 attacks in the map archives areas. In the section for 2001, the September spot has a plane in the slot, referencing September 11, 2001. Some players found this to be in poor taste, while others feel it was meant as a memorial for the people who died.
God of War reference
Easter EggsAt one point, the Admiral responds to a character apologizing by saying “Don’t be sorry, be better.” Due to the timing of the game’s release, it’s possible that this line is intended as a nod to God of War (2018), in which Kratos says the same line.
All Dark One sightings
Easter EggsThe mutants known as the Dark Ones were the major antagonists of Metro 2033, and they also returned in Last Light. While they do not play a role in the story of Metro Exodus, a couple Dark Ones can be seen observing you. There is also a hallucination of a Dark One if you smoke a hookah pipe at the Caspian Sea.
