God of War Ragnarok What We Know So Far

The wait is almost over; Sony Santa Monica Studios has finally announced the official release date of God of War: Ragnarok: November 9, 2022, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Here’s everything we know about one of the most anticipated games of all time, God of War: Ragnarok.

Fimbulwinter Is Over, Ragnarok Is Here.

At the end of 2018’s God of War, we were told that the Fimbulwinter was upon us. For those unaware, this is a three-year winter period that leads to the Norse apocalypse called Ragnarok. Now finally, the winter period is over, and Ragnarok is upon us (though it took four years probably due to covid)

Director of God of War Cory Balrog mentioned in an interview that the Norse series would be coming to an end. God of War Ragnarok is set to be the final game in the Norse series. Will Kratos be able to defeat Thor and end Ragnarok? 

The Teasing Trailer Released

The epic release trailer has caused a wave of anticipation with a short clip of Kratos fighting in the frozen Nordic landscape. He surprisingly falls into the depths of the woods and is joined by his son Atreus. They form a father-and-son bond and face a Fenrir Wolf. 

The reveal trailer gives us a glimpse of what we can expect from the storyline. It’s been several years since the 2018 God of War’s unexpected ending. Where it was revealed that Atreus’ mother was, in fact, a giant. 

Atreus has since then grown up, and his half-giant genes are beginning to develop faster than we could have anticipated. Together along the journey, Kratos and Atreus must face the ever-approaching Ragnarok apocalypse.

There are some new and old foes that Kratos and Atreus are expected to meet along the way. Old for such as Freya and new enemies like Thor, the God of Thunder, are seen to be some formidable opponents. 

The latest story trailer was released in September 2022. It gave fans and anticipated gamers across the world a better view with regards to what they can expect from the latest God of War, Ragnarok.

The centerpiece of the trailer is the developing relationship between Kratos and Atreus, and there is tension in the air between the father and son. Throughout the trailer, Atreus refuses to tell Kratos some information, and it’s not all as it seems.  

The trailer begins with a secret clue as Arteus is seen touching a tree. This is similar to the original beginning of God of War when Kratos holds a tree with a handprint on it. However, the handprint on the tree was that of Faye, Atreus’ deceased mother.

Atreus is no longer a child anymore as compared to the last God of War and wishes to express his own personal agenda. However, it’s ever so present that Atreus considers himself ready to become the new protector.

Hidden Easter Egg

The high-paced trailer featured Kratos and Thor trading blows and created much-anticipated hype for the 9 November 2022 release. The trailer is packed with action and drags your attention away from an Easter egg that is hidden in plain sight.

The opening of the trailer starts off subtly with Kratos sharpening an arrow over a flame; this could be an indication as to what’s coming in Ragnarok.

In the distance, we see an image of a man with horns; as the clip continues, we realize that it’s Atreus carrying a deer over his shoulder. However, many speculate that this image could be the signaling of Atreus’s transformation into Loki, the god of mischief, in the penultimate Norse series.

Cross the Paths of New Characters 

The latest trailer has revealed some new characters in the game. One of the surprise characters is Angrboda, who is said to be “one of the last remaining giants.” In Norse mythology, she is known as the God of Sorrow, the wife of Loki, and the mother of Fenrir.

The introduction of Angrboda ties in with the scenes in the trailer, where wolves are linked to Atreus. He shoots an arrow that cuts through the sky and changes the day into night as the wolf launches into the sky and chases the pointer.

As the trailer develops, Kratos is seen cutting the chains off a prisoner in the trailer. This prisoner asks Kratos what “he wants from him?” “is it the God of War you came to find?”  

This prisoner is Tyr, the son of Odin and the half-brother of Thor and Baldur. Tyr appears to have a vendetta against his Norse father after his father imprisoned him. He’ll more than likely want to even the score and assist Kratos.

Sharp Blades and New Shields 

The trailer gives us a glimpse of what type of weaponry to expect. Kratos is seen using various weapons of different shapes and sizes. The icon Blades of Chaos (the Leviathan Ax, forms part of his weaponry.) 

Some new shields have been revealed in the trailer. These will offer something slightly different. So far, only two shields have been displayed in the trailer; these are the Dauntless Shield and the Stone Wall Shield.

The Dauntless Shield offers the additional option to parry enemies; using the shield to parry will cause it to turn red and allow a special feature to smash enemies back and forth. Atreus is seen wielding his Talbon Bow and Arrow to back up Kratos in battles.   

There’s more to it than just throwing axes and blades of chaos. The trailer reveals Kratos catapulting from one platform to another using his grappling chain. This grappling chain deals a powerful blow to multiple surrounding enemies.

The Enemies That Await Kratos

The scene is set for Kratos and Atreus, as they must journey to each of the Nine Realms in search of the answers they need. Although each realm will possess its own challenges, along the journey, there are some gruesome Norse gods and monsters that they will need to defeat.

It’s expected that Kratos will be making several enemies throughout his God of War Ragnarok journey. The trailer gives you a glimpse of some of the fearsome enemies that can be encountered. 

Enemies that are sure to be met along your adventure are the beasts that roam the nine realms, the elves that try to protect the Light of Alfheim, ethereal ghosts that roam the nine realms, dwarves, and mythical Norse monsters.  Will one of those realms be Asgard?

Let’s not forget about the most brutal enemy, Aesir. These are the gods that rule the nine realms. There will definitely be some epic battles with the Aesir throughout the game. 

The Ending is Near

The GoW Norse Mythology series is set for a final showdown. Will Kratos continue his dominance as the God of War and stop Ragnarok from destroying all Nine Realms? All will be revealed on November 9, 2022.
