The Twelve Tasks of Asterix reference

Ostereier

The Blood and Wine quest Paperchase references the task to find Permit A38 in “The Place That Sends You Mad” from the animated movie The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, as well as the bank puzzle from Douglas Adams’s text adventure game Bureaucracy.

GOG and DRM

Ostereier

In the quest “The Tower Outta Nowheres,” you are trapped by the Defensive Regulatory Magicon and must find Gottfried’s Omni-opening Grimoire to get out. These are abbreviated as DRM and GOG respectively. When you reach the grimoire, you learn that GOG can get past DRM. This is a reference to how the site GOG sells DRM-free games.

All Fairy Tale References

Ostereier

The Blood and Wine expansion is filled with references to classic fairy tales, including:

  • Longlocks, a girl who is found hanged by her own hair, is a reference to Rapunzel. Her name might also be a reference to Goldilocks.
  • Speaking of Goldilocks, if you head left from the starting area, you can find three bears asleep on beds. They will wake up if you try to take their food.
  • In another house, you’ll find the Big Bad Wolf, who threw Little Red Riding Hood down a well. Her body can be found in the well nearby.
  • Behind the tower, there are three houses: one collapsed house made of straw, one collapsed house made of sticks, and one intact house made of brick. This is a reference to the Three Little Pigs. If you use Aard to break the brick house, the three pigs will run out of it.
  • If you head right, you can find a town where a girl is selling drugs. You learn that she was originally selling flint, a reference to the Little Match Girl.
  • Syanna will be trying to rescue Hansel from the Wicked Witch. This is a reference to Hansel and Gretel.
  • You can find a boy being attacked by wolves. When you talk to him, you find out he is a liar. This is a reference to The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
  • If you find all three magical beans, you can grow a beanstalk that stretches up into the clouds and climb it to fight a giant. This entire setup is a reference to Jack and the Beanstalk.
  • You can find a cat named Puss wearing boots, a reference to Puss In Boots.
  • There is a goat named Billy Goat. More specifically, it is a reference to Koziolek Matolek (Matolek the Billy-Goat), a character from a popular Polish comic for children.
  • While not a specific fairytale, you can find a pot of gold (although it releases a panther) if you follow the rainbow all the way to its end, a reference to the myth about leprechaun gold being found in a pot at the end of the rainbow.
  • You can also find the Wolpertinger, a creature from German folklore.
  • A barely-clothed “Emperor” claims to be wearing a robe that only the wise can see, a reference to The Emperor’s New Clothes.
  • Thumbelina can be found, as well, with tiny houses to match.
  • You can come across four animals standing on top of each other, and Syanna says the fable is called “The Musicians of Blaviken.” This is a reference to The Musicians of Bremen. (The conversation also references Geralt’s own history with Blaviken.)

Dark Souls reference

Ostereier

In the Blood and Wine expansion, follow the Will-o-the-Wisp after you fight the giant. It will lead you to a cave where you’ll find a campfire with a sword in the center of it. This is a reference to the bonfires in Dark Souls. You can take the sword.

Doctor Who reference

Ostereier

In the cemetery, you can find Weeping Angels, a reference to Doctor Who.

Monty Python reference

Ostereier

Outside of the hidden cave near Benek for the quest “Hidden in the Stars,” you will find blood, bodies, and an unkillable white rabbit, a reference to the rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Tomb Raider references

Ostereier

Inside the well for “The Great Escape,” go up the steps after you leave the water and investigate the body there. Geralt will refer to the person as a tomb raider.

In the quest “Turn and Face the Strange,” you can find two more additional points where Geralt references the Tomb Raider series through his comments.
