Fake Cheers at Japan’s PS4 Launch Event

Yesterday, we told you about the enthusiasm and success with which the PS4 was greeted at its launch in Japan. None of that has changed.

However, the enthusiasm might seem a little greater than it was—because a lot of the applause and cheers were fake (just check out the video clip below).

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of this recently. People slammed Microsoft for it after they used an applause track during the Xbox One reveal. Fake applause isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Like a laugh track on TV, an applause track encourages the audience to join in and increases the overall excitement at an event. Some people have also pointed out that on a cultural level, it might be more acceptable with a Japanese audience. And Sony and Microsoft certainly didn’t invent the idea.
